Adore and Restore!
The Power Of Restoration
When this antique Chesterfield came into our workshop, the customer informed us that he was unhappy with the work that the previous re-upholsterer had done, and was very apprehensive about trusting someone else to put it right. Unfortunately, upon closer inspection it became quite clear that it had been very badly done indeed; however, not deterred by a challenge, we assured the customer that we could confidently put it back to its former glory.
We removed the 4” x 2” plank and over-sized spring unit, they had wedged in, which had damaged the frame and, then repaired the frame with a new solid beach rail, using dowels and glue. We then webbed the seat and hand-sewed the new coil springs in, and traditionally built the sofa from the frame up. The customer was beyond pleased with the finished result and remarked that it looked as it had when he’d first bought it, and friends and family couldn’t believe it was the same piece of furniture!

Re-upholstering a Show Wood Chair
This chair arrived in the workshop looking very tired and dated. The customer was updating his decor and wanted an appropriate fabric to fit their 1920’s styled room. They had visited our showroom and, once they had been guided through the process of choosing a fabric, they decided on a Jim Dickens – Algeria/Cadiz/Metallic Black.
Removing the old cover
Firstly, we carefully stripped off the old cover, making sure not to damage the woodwork, and saving any fillings that could be re-used. It is especially important to save any fillings, when re-covering an antique piece of furniture, as these are part of the criteria for what classifies it as an antique.
Repairing the frame
Once all of the old material has been stripped off, we can now see what possible repairs need to be made to the frame. This is usually something we have cause to believe needs repairing beforehand, but we can properly assess the extent of any damage, once the frame is exposed.
After any necessary repairs to the frame have been carried out, using traditional techniques, we re-lash springs; reinforce or create new stitch rolls; reinstate any existing old fillings and then, add any new fillings where necessary. The new cover is then cut, sewn, and put into place.
With our guidance, and the help of *Troynorth Trimmings, the customer chose a braid (Heritage/Sherborne/Steel) to complement their chosen fabric. We then applied the braid to the now fully re-upholstered chair for a clean, neat finish.
Finally, after a lot of hard work and skilled craftsmanship, the chair, in all its finery, is hardly recognisable in comparison to how it looked before. It is now a real show stopper and ready to hand back to the customer.
